The anti political backlash against identity politics has gone way too far, and has been subsumed as "transformative" by people intent on anything but transformation. However, the basis of identity politics- post structural assumptions- have proven to be utterly simplistic and in that case false imho. For example, it is generally assumed within identity politics that power and knowledge are reproduced through narratives between individuals, and that should we change these narratives, the entire power balance will change, and people will no longer be able to undermine people's quest for justice. In spite of 30 years of that kind of post structural analysis and the practices it inspires, large powerful institutions and large objective truths still exist- often to the great benefit of those with tremendous power. Those who are willing as ever to treat people horribly. Who are fine with others believing that so long as we change our speech, power will have been turned on its head. This simply hasn't happened, and in fact in the last 30 years, those institutions and their grasp on the knowledge has only become more concentrated, more vile, more committed to criminogenic activities. It's not tho that we should abandon it, it just needs to go much further, include a socialist analysis, old school means of production stuff that's been the missing part. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
