Death of the Sun & other installations at Nathan Phillips Square

After every Nuit Blanche (the night long art festival held in Toronto and many other cities annually) there are often a few of the installations or pieces that are left up for an extended period of time.

This year three large-scale installations were left up at Toronto's City Hall. One is inside the building and two are in Nathan Phillips Square.

All three are are powerful and well worth visiting.

Death of the Sun by Director X is a breathtaking and awe-inspiring look at the life-cycle of the sun and I think it has a very broad appeal due to its combination of scale, science and art.

Pneuma by director Floria Sigismondi is an amazing piece that projects images in motion onto a wall of water spray that is jetting up from the square's pool/rink. It is a technical and artistic wonder.

Ocean by Philip Beesley is inside City Hall and consists of lights dangling from fabric that rustle and move with sounds that whisper at you.

Ocean can be seen today and tomorrow between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The other two are night pieces. They can be seen Sunday, October 9:  10:30 pm to 2 am and
Monday, October 10:  7 pm to midnight.

If you can make it out to catch them, they are well worth the trip!

Ocean

Ocean is hard to capture with a camera and really needs to be experienced. It has a hypnotic and slightly unnerving quality.

Pneuma

Again, difficult to capture with a camera, Pneuma is large in scale and ambition and the images played off a wall of water spray are very powerful.

Death of the Sun

I cannot speak highly enough of this truly epic and almost overpowering experience. A wild and wonderful representation of the life and death of the sun that forces one to think about our place and meaning in the universe.

Look forward to what next year's extended projects bring.
