Australian Trade Union Boycott of the Dutch on Behalf of Indonesian Independence, Cartoon, 1947 -- Daily LIFT #5

Australian Trade Union Boycott of the Dutch on Behalf of Indonesian Independence
Cartoon, 1947

Between 1945 and 1949 Australian trade unions, beginning with the Waterside Workers Federation, enforced a boycott of all Dutch vessels by refusing to service or work on them in support of Indonesian independence.

This campaign of working class internationalist solidarity was only lifted when the Dutch recognized Indonesian independence in 1949.

An appeal to Australians to support the Indonesians in their fight for freedom from colonialism and the brutality of the Dutch occupation can be read below:

Royal York Strike, Toronto 1961 - Daily LIFT #4

Royal York Strike, Toronto 1961

In May, 1961 a strike began at the fancy Royal York Hotel in Toronto that was to prove a long and very bitter one marked by the underhanded and ugly tactics of hotel management. Many of the workers came from immigrant communities and were women.

The reference in the signs of the strikers to "tunnels" was referring to the use of underground tunnels into the hotel by the bosses to ferry in scabs and supplies.

After nearly a year the strike ultimately failed with the workers losing on most of their demands.

To read more about the strike see this article by Jeremy Milloy: A Battle Royal: Service Work Activism and the Royal York Strike, 1961-1962

In Memory of the Estevan Massacre, September 29, 1931 w. Song of the Estevan Miners

RCMP officers just prior to the massacre

Song of the Estevan Miners

In a little mining village
Scarcely noticed on the map
Bourgeois guns were turned on toilers
and their life's blood there did sap.

No-one dreamed of such a slaughter
In the Town of Estevan,
That armed thugs with guns and bullets
Would shoot men with empty hands.

Three more martyrs for the miners,
Three more murders for the boss --
Brutal laws to crush the workers
Who dare fight in freedom's cause.

As these miners lay a-dying
In their agony and pain,
Murmured, "Though we die for freedom,
Yet we do not die in vain".

"For the working class will triumph
If united they will stand,
They will win the world for labor
And the workers rule the land".

Come, unite! Come, unite!
And for freedom we will fight!
Workers of the world, awaken!
Workers of the world, unite!

On September 29, 1931 the RCMP opened fire on a crowd of miners who were marching in the town of Estevan, Saskatchewan. They murdered three of them and wounded many more.

Despite these killings it was union activists like Communist leader Annie Buller who were charged in the aftermath of the massacre. Buller was eventually sentenced to a year in jail for having given a speech to the miners prior to the slaughter.

The song above was written in honour of Nick Nervan, Julian Hryshko and Peter Markunt who sacrificed their lives that day.

Below is Annie Buller's short account of the strike, massacre and aftermath written in 1949.

Socialism on the Farm - Collective Farming in the USSR 1978

Socialism on the Farm - Reports on Real Socialism 1978

(Vintage Leftist Leaflet Project)

Part of a series of reports about various aspects of socialism in the USSR in the late 1970s, Socialism on the Farm looked at the practice and challenges of collective farming in the republics. It was written by a member of the Communist Party of Israel and a member of the Communist Party of Venezuela and related what they learned on their trips to a number of farms in different regions.

The authors look at the evolution of the farms, the techniques used to increase production given the very difficult conditions in many cases, the issues of drought and how the system responded to it, the way the farms were interconnected and how they were often involved in projects not directly related to agriculture and what village and collective farm life was like at the time in terms of education, health and housing.

They also relate the practice of collective farming to what has been occurring in their own countries.

Interesting quotes include:
"In addition," the chairman told us, "our collective farm is joint owner of a hothouse complex, a cement factory, construction and power amalgamations, and a Young Pioneer camp and health resort on the Black Sea. In all, this amounts to one-fifth of our production assets."
and this reminder that the imperialist tactic of starving and strangling the economies of countries that try to chart and independent or socialist path is an old one:
Imperialism's plans go even further, its ideologists have recently proclaimed food to be a "strategic weapon." And it is being used to strengthen the positions of capital, prevent countries from developing independently, and stifle their peoples' fight for freedom and social progress.
We will look at some of the other Reports on Real Socialism in the coming weeks.
The world we live in today is very far from solving the fundamental problem of man's daily bread. Hundreds of millions of people are either starving or living very near the starvation line. In a number of countries whose development was delayed and distorted by imperialism, food shortages are growing and this leads to news forms of dependence on imperialism.

When The Left Chapter began part of what I wanted to do on the blog was to show and highlight vintage public leftist election/political leaflets and booklets. While many of these have been offered with commentary to date, a very large collection of hundreds of them from several different sources remains and to preserve these often quite rare documents we will be posting them on a regular (almost daily) basis now often without or with minimal commentary so that people may have access to them as quickly as possible as an historical resource.

While these will all be leaflets from a variety of different leftist viewpoints and countries, they are being posted as an historical/study resource and the views or opinions expressed in them do not necessarily reflect the views of this blog or blogger.

All of these posts (as well as posts made to date) will be listed on the page: Vintage Communist/Socialist Leaflets  (which is still being updated with past posts).

If you have any public, vintage leaflets or booklets you would like to contribute to this project please contact us via theleftchapter@outlook.com

PPC Goes Ever Lower, Climate Fails, Brownface Aftermath and more -- The Left Chapter Canadian Election Round-up Week Three

This is the third of our weekly Friday election round-ups of developments -- as well as the inane, bizarre, humorous and unusually facile -- in the great show that is mainstream bourgeois politics during the election of 2019.

The second was: Brownface, Scheer Hypocrisy, the PPC and more -- The Left Chapter Canadian Election Round-up Week Two

People's Party outdoes itself in race to bottom

In the week following the bombshell scandal of photos of Justin Trudeau in brownface surfacing, the People's Party of Canada has been working very hard to be the worst bottom feeders in the proverbial tank.

After letting a candidate go for having the nerve to ask that the party denounce white supremacy and racism, Maxime Bernier and his assorted crew of bigots and knuckledraggers were being what they are.

In fact, instead of denouncing racism Bernier stood by his candidate in Essex, Bill Capes who was discovered to have tweeted things like "Yellow people been working since 5am, black people up at noon. Lol." Apparently he gets a pass because he apologized and "he shares our values and that's the most important [thing]". Indeed he does!

It also turns out that "The former leader of a U.S. neo-Nazi group, a former Soldiers of Odin member and a Pegida Canada official were among those whose signatures were submitted to Elections Canada last year to officially register the People’s Party of Canada, records show."

On a roll the PPC then posted a video of their Great Leader musing about the evils of multiculturalism that included an image of Japanese Canadians interned in a camp during WWII being deported to Japan. They have since deleted that part of the video though without issuing an apology or clarification of any kind.

But hey, Mad Max says it is Greta Thunberg who is too ‘extreme’. OK then.

Remember, the geniuses running some of the televised debates have decided Bernier will be allowed in.

Trudeau brownface aftermath

While it is unclear if any serious long term damage was done to Trudeau's reelection chances in the wake of the brownface scandal -- which we looked at last week -- it has brought to the surface deeply troubling aspects of the obliviousness of many Canadians to our past and present histories and realities of systemic racism.

A number of articles worth reading on the issue were published since our last roundup:

Climate fails

With global climate strikes taking place and the issue of the climate emergency becoming a central one, Trudeau decided to announce this week that a Liberal government would reach net-zero emissions by 2050. How? Well with unicorn tails and fairy dust of course!

Actually, in all seriousness, Trudeau has no more idea how they would achieve it than the rest of us but it sounds good.

The NDP tried to call him out on this with the snappy line "You. Bought. A. Pipeline."

Trouble is, as we noted on The Left Chapter, NDP provincial governments have an environmental record that is not terribly great and on the issue of the LNG project in B.C. Singh has been oddly silent!

Someone else appeared upset with Trudeau's environmental credentials:  Arrest at Montreal climate strike after protester reportedly throws egg at Trudeau

Also, "Greta Thunberg meets Trudeau, tells him he's not doing enough to fight climate change" which is an understatement.

Other noteworthy articles related to climate change and the election are:

Umm...what?

The Greens were tripping the light fantastic a bit deciding to photoshop reusable metal straws and cups into leader promos and musing about decriminalizing drugs long enough to solve the problem of criminalization only to then criminalize them again (?).

Other notable stories:

We reported last week that various pro-Israel groups were trying to get NDP candidate Miranda Gallo dumped for her pro-Palestinian activism. Fortunately, at least for now, the party has resisted these calls.

The Skyscraper - Raymond Corder, Socialist poet, New York, 1921

The Skyscraper

Talk about beauty — Why, boy,
That scene would fill a blooming sphinx with joy!
All that steel frame-work bristling in the sun
Is something we have done.

We are creators, man,
We sweated, plugged, and built it, span by span
And every rusty beam that skyward towers
Is ours -- we built it -- it is ours!

Sure, buddy, sure, I know
The boss has got it now -- he'll have to go;
When we form our Industrial Parliament --
We'll can him subsequent --

But, say, bo, watch them clouds,
They seem to stand still while that eye-beam strouds
Across the sky -- she's pretty, ain't she, son?
That piece of work we've done.

NDP hypocrisy fueled by seeming short-term memory loss

The good folks in the NDP would have you believe that only two parties have ever governed in Canada and that they are the evil Liberals and Conservatives. If only voters would finally throw off the shackles of this duopoly the Canadian people would be liberated for the dawn of new political era.

The trouble in Mouseland is that this is not quite true. The NDP certainly has been in government in Canada on a provincial level and in the last couple of decades to say that its record in office has not exactly broken the mould of neo-liberal governance would be rather generous.

From Darrell Dexter to Rachel Notley to John Horgan to the disaster of a generation in "power" in Manitoba, New Democrats have a proven record of being nothing very fundamentally different that is pretty hard to dispute unless you are willfully blind or buy into the party's culture of groupthink and gaslighting.

We could -- and often have on The Left Chapter -- go on and on about this but two recent examples really show how they are trying to sell you shit as Shinola.

First there is this rather disingenuous post from Niki Ashton who is often seen as a "left" New Democrat.

The Communist Party correctly calls her out on what seems an obvious attempt to peddle what are at least as clearly the political crimes and failings of the Manitoba NDP as if they are all on the Trudeau Liberals and Harper.

It is always worth remembering the Manitoba NDP left office with a higher child poverty rate than when they came in and a minimum wage that was lower than that of neighbouring Liberal Ontario!

Then there is the attempt this week by the federal party to call out Trudeau for the -- admittedly totally shameful -- decision to buy the Trans Mountain pipeline. They are so proud of their "You. Bought. A. Pipeline." line that they sent out an email about it.

While giving full marks for chutzpah, it is pretty rich for the federal NDP to be putting this out at all.The pipeline was purchased to placate a provincial NDP government whose leader, Rachel Notley, did her very best to push a hard right line on tar sands exploitation and make it mainstream due to her allegedly coming from a "left" party in ways that overt reactionaries could only dream of.

Notley signaled that her government was going to take a quisling approach to collaboration with business and the oil companies on her very first day in office.

The line is even more absurd given Singh's refusal to take a stand on the BC NDP riding roughshod over the rights of Indigenous people and environmental concerns with regards to the LNG project. It is also worth remembering that it was B.C. NDP Premier John Horgan whose profoundly cynical comments after green-lighting the Site C project included him actually saying "When it comes to reconciliation and working with Indigenous leadership there has been over 150 years of disappointment in British Columbia. I’m not the first person to stand before you and disappoint Indigenous people."

It amazes me that any New Democrat could possibly pull off this faux outrage with a straight face. The NDP pretty clearly depends on people either having a short memory or engaging in double think.

As we have noted before, there is more than enough hypocrisy to go around. And there is also more than enough of a history of the NDP in power in Canada to tell us exactly what we can expect to change if they get elected federally which is nothing much at all.

Spice Rub Charcoal BBQ Whole Chicken

Today we are going to take a look at cooking a whole chicken on the charcoal BBQ using a spice rub. This will make the chicken well seasoned, slightly spicy and nicely smokey.

To begin we want to prepare the rub. The amounts we used here should be enough to season two normal sized chickens.

Spice Rub Ingredients:

1 tablespoon hot chili powder
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon mustard powder
1 tablespoon ground cumin
1 tablespoon ground coriander
1/2 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or to taste)

Combine all the spices thoroughly.

Prepare your charcoal BBQ as usual.

Place you chicken on a platter or in a tray and drizzle some olive oil over it rubbing it around to make sure it gets on the whole bird. Then drizzle over the juice of half a lemon.

Thoroughly and evenly coat the chicken with the spice rub. Then season it with freshly ground sea salt to taste.

When your BBQ is ready place the chicken directly over the coals for one minute a side. Use tongs to carefully turn the chicken so you do this on all four sides.

Place the chicken in an aluminum BBQ or oven tray oiled on the bottom with olive oil. If you used the tray to season the bird make sure you rinse it out before reusing it and oiling it for cooking or any spices on the bottom of the tray will burn.

Cook the chicken in the tray over the coals for between 1 1/2 and 2 hours until done depending on the size. A chicken is thoroughly cooked when it has reached an internal temperature of 180 degrees at its thickest part according to Health Canada.

To regulate the heat and the coals you want to cook primarily with the BBQ lid on (flue open) taking the lid off to get the coals going again every once and a while. I generally do lid on for 10-15 minutes, then lid off for around 5 minutes, then lid back on 10-15, etc.

When the chicken is cooked let rest on a platter 10 minutes before carving.

This delightfully smokey and flavorful dish pairs perfectly with sides of rice, grilled zucchini, and a garden salad. It also goes well with your favorite chilled white or rosé wine.

Enjoy.
