The Paris Commune, the first attempt by the modern working class to seize power in history, was proclaimed March 18, 1871.

Karl Marx's Grave Memorial Unveiled, Highgate Cemetery, London, 1956 -- Daily LIFT #149
The now famous and iconic memorial at the grave of Karl Marx in Highgate Cemetery was unveiled on March 15, 1956, the day after the anniversary of his death on March 14, 1883.
The monument was designed by Laurence Bradshaw and was funded by the Communist Party of Great Britain. The party's General Secretary, Harry Pollitt, led the ceremony.

"It is impossible to be here, speak from this rostrum on behalf of Cuba, and not recall historic moments of the General Assembly which are also part of our dearest memories: Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, Raúl Castro and the “Chancellor of Dignity”, Raúl Roa, just to mention the most significant, have brought here not only the voice of our people but also the voice of other Latin American and Caribbean, African, Asian, non-aligned peoples, with whom we have shared more than half a century of struggles for a fair international order, which is still far to be attained.
These realities, Madam President, are not the result of socialism, like the President of the United States said yesterday here. Leaflet: Karl Marx: Correspondent for "The New York Tribune", Soviet Life 1983
Written by Soviet historian Nelly Rumyantseva for the English language magazine Soviet Life in 1983 this is an interesting overview of Marx and Engels' time as correspondents for the New York Tribune between 1851 - 62. "During that period he and Engels wrote a total of about 500 articles, or an average of 50 articles a year -- something like one a week."
While the relationship began well, and helped Marx get some much needed money, over time it soured with the Tribune publishing much of his later work unattributed or declining to publish pieces altogether.
Rumyantseva also compiled "Marx and Engels on the United States" which was published in English in 1979.

Dr. Allende, print by Lea Grundig, 1974 -- Daily LIFT #12
Lea Grundig was a German artist who joined the Communist Party in 1924. After having been imprisoned by the Nazis she fled to Slovakia and then Palestine in 1940. After the war she returned to Germany and lived in the German Democratic Republic.
Her art was widely displayed and this piece in tribute to Allende, who had been overthrown and killed the year before in a fascist coup in Chile, debuted in Dresden. She was awarded the Clara Zetkin Medal in 1964 and the Order of Karl Marx (the GDR's highest honour) in 1976. She died in 1977.

All this he brushed aside as though it were a cobweb, ignoring it, answering only when extreme necessity compelled him. And he died beloved, revered and mourned by millions of revolutionary fellow workers -- from the mines of Siberia to California, in all parts of Europe and America -- and I make bold to say that, though he may have had many opponents, he had hardly one personal enemy.

On the one hand there have started into life industrial and scientific forces which no epoch of the former human history had ever suspected. On the other hand there exist symptoms of decay, far surpassing the horrors of the latter times of the Roman Empire. In our days, everything seems pregnant with its contrary. Machinery, gifted with the wonderful power of shortening and fructifying human labor, we behold starving and overworking it. The newfangled sources of wealth, by some strange, weird spell, are turned into sources of want. The victories of art seem bought by the loss of character.
At the same pace that mankind masters nature, man seems to become enslaved to the other men or to his own infamy. Even the pure life of science seems unable to shine but on the dark background of ignorance. All our invention and progress seem to result in endowing material forces with intellectual life, and in stultifying human life into a material force.
This antagonism between modern industry and science, on the one hand, and modern misery and dissolution, on the other hand; this antagonism between the productive forces and the social relations of our epoch is a fact, palpable, overwhelming, and not to be controverted. Some may wail over it; others may wish to get rid of modern arts, in order to get rid of modern conflicts. Or they may imagine that so signal a progress in industry wants to be completed by as signal a regress in politics. For our part, we do not mistake the shape of the shrewd spirit that continues to mark all these contradictions. We know that if the newfangled forces of society are to work satisfactorily, they need only to be mastered by newfangled men -- and such are the working men. They are as much an invention of modern time as machinery itself.

The Leader, Chinese Karl Marx Anime Bio Episode One Released
Drinks are on Karl Marx after he bests some aristocrats in a pub debate.
The first of episode of The Leader is out now and has been posted to You Tube with English subtitles.
After opening with a somber look at Engels speaking at his funeral, the episode seeks to weave aspects of Marx's early personal life (with a large and likely rather fanciful emphasis on his courtship of and romance with Jenny) with his embrace of Hegelian philosophy and his sense of the terrible injustice that existed in the world.
There is fencing, tavern debates, a fancy ball at which Marx is not welcome and an encounter with his father angry at mounting bills due to Marx's spending while at the University of Bonn.
The first episode ends with a song that includes lyrics such as "For the liberation of all peoples I have no choice but to advance - this is very Marx" overlaying a timeline chronicle of Marx's life.
The series has been a big hit in China and further episodes covering his entire life are coming soon.

We learn how Baku rose to become a major early oil center and as a result developed a more modern working class. Almost half of the world's oil production came from the area early in the 20th Century and due to this the city experienced a boom that drew over 60,000 workers of 30 nationalities.

After setting up an exclusion zone so that media and supporters could not see what was going on, RCMP officers in British Columbia armed with assault and sniper rifles invaded Wet'suwet'en territory and arrested 14 peaceful community members who were guarding their lands at a checkpoint on Monday night.
