Publication Details: Oxford University Press, 1985
We all know the great Canadian classic Anne of Green Gables. The novels have enchanted readers for generations and have spawned renowned TV adaptations. L. M. Montgomery's heroine continues to draw tourists to Canada's smallest province, Prince Edward Island, in search of the island and maritime culture and environment that spawned her.
Published in 1985 the cookbook we are looking at today sought to feature recipes and dishes inspired by quotes and moments in the Gables' books. The book was also aimed at younger and budding chefs, but, of course, is great for cooks of all ages.
Full of terrific black-and-white and colour illustrations by Barbara Di Lella, the book captures the charm and whimsy of the stories while reflecting the cooking of the time and place. with recipes that include things like how to make "old-fashioned" lemonade or traditional ice cream at home. It also had cooking tips and terms useful for a beginner.
Here we feature some recipes with the quotes that inspired them and the illustrations that frame them.
