Pumpkin, Winter Squash and Carrot Cookbook w. Pumpkin Pie, Squash Ice Cream, Carrot Cake & more -- Vintage Cookbook TBT

Vintage Cookbook: Pumpkin, Winter Squash and Carrot Cookbook - Jane Winge, editor

Publication Details: The Litchville 2000 Committee of Litchville, North Dakota, 2000

This very comprehensive look at recipes related to pumpkin, squash and carrots seems to have been a community project for the small town of Litchville, North Dakota. It has dishes submitted from folks around the town and region as well as some borrowed from other cookbooks.

There are lots of classics as well as some imaginative uses for these great fall and winter ingredients. There are also, of course, many vegetarian offerings.

The book is divided into several sections from soups and salads to mains and desserts. There is even a beverage section. We have included at least one recipe from each.

We have also included an information page about the town and a couple of information pages about the ingredients.

If you are a fan of these ingredients, this book is well worth seeking out.

Cooking...With a Velvet Touch w. Clam Chowder, Pumpkin Pie & more -- Vintage Cookbook TBT

Vintage Cookbook: Cooking...With a Velvet Touch, Mary Blake (48 pages)

Publication Details: Carnation Brands 1960

1960's Cooking...With a Velvet Touch is a cookbook that reflects many aspects of its era. It has recipes both timeless and hideous, period cookbook photography and lots of what were meant to be helpful cooking and life tips to stay organized and on top of things.

Meant to create brand loyalty it, to say the least, pushes the envelope of good taste in finding culinary uses for Carnation Evaporated Milk! In fact, we looked at one of the more heinous suggestions before on the blog.

And there is nothing quite as appetizing as seeing evaporated milk poured from a can onto ground beef!

But it has lots of great recipes as well, especially for sauces and desserts, and is as charming as it is dated. It is also a quintessential example of the "brand name cookbook" genre that were immensely popular at one time and that are still around in examples like Campbell's Soup cookbooks.

Evaporated milk pouring onto ground beef says 'gourmet' to me!

Helpful hints for those who wish to be hyper-organized!

Betty Crocker's 1960 Thanksgiving Ideas with Bread Stuffings, Frozen Pumpkin Pie & more -- Vintage Thanksgiving TBT

Vintage Cookbook: Betty Crocker's Party Book

Publication Details: Golden Press 1960

Betty Crocker's Party Book is a terrific little book with a spiral binding that is meant to help you prepare for parties and events with friends and family. Its is organized around specific holidays and celebrations that include some broader ones like Christmas, Easter, Valentine's Day, New Year's Eve, and, of course, Thanksgiving, as well as some that are specifically American like Lincoln's Birthday and the Fourth of July. It also has ideas for Labour Day, May Day, Mother's and Father's Day, St. Patrick's Day and more.

It is really fun with quaint drawings, typically period cookbook photography and some predictably dated ingredients, combinations and party tips among the many very good ones.

Today we are, needless-to-say, featuring the Thanksgiving menu that includes four stuffing ideas, the hilariously gross Harvest Gold Salad and a really neat idea for Frozen Pumpkin Pie.

And what Thanksgiving gathering would be complete without the Thanksgiving Gilded Fruit Centerpiece? Get the can of gold spray ready folks!

Quite the centerpiece! I also dig the gelatinous "Harvest Gold Salad".

What for this cookbook to make a reappearance in future!

Roast Turkey with Oyster Stuffing and Giblet Gravy & more: A 1974 Thanksgiving menu! -- Vintage Thanksgiving Throwback Thursday

Earlier this year we took a look at Elizabeth Baird's excellent  1974 cookbook, Classic Canadian Cooking: Menus for the Seasons.

As the title implies, the cookbook is based around a series of seasonal full menus that give a complete meal from appetizers, salads and soups through the main course to the dessert.

As part of our lead-up to the Thanksgiving holiday -- much beloved by so many not only for the gatherings of friends and families but also for the food -- we return to this cookbook to look at her Thanksgiving menu.

And what a menu it is with roast turkey with oyster stuffing and giblet gravy, turnip souffle, cranberry sauce and a pumpkin pie recipe (of course) and more.

Watch for posts later today and this week with more Thanksgiving ideas.
